Franks Announces $6.3 Million Grant for Arizona Department of Public Safety July 23, 2010 — Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) announced a grant in the amount of $6,397,877 for FY2011, awarded to the Arizona Department of Public Safety as a part of the Regional Information Sharing Systems (RISS) Program/ Rocky Mountain Information Network (RMIN).
Congressman Trent Franks stated,"RMIN/RISS provides a vital life-saving and national security service to the people of Arizona and the nation as a whole. It has received bipartisan Congressional support for over thirty years, and has been a ‘line item’ in the President's budget for almost a decade. Thus, it is extremely concerning that in President Obama's budget for FY 2011, he has proposed to cut RISS funding from $45 million to just a fraction of that, $9 million, which would effectively eliminate RMIN and place the RISS program itself in jeopardy. While the recent grant for RISS comes at an important time and is highly needed, it is important that full funding be maintained for this vital program. Our law enforcement cannot afford to lose the critical intelligence, as well as investigative and information sharing services, that RISS provides."
CORRECTED: Franks Introduces Legislation to Protect Critical Uranium Mining in AZ from Obama Administration Ban July 1, 2010 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today, along with 30 other Members of the House, introduced H.R. 5665, bipartisan legislation that would prevent uranium mining in Arizona from being banned by the Obama Administration. Uranium is the key natural resource necessary to produce nuclear energy, and Arizona is home to the most significant uranium deposits in the United States. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar has announced the Administration's intention to withdraw these lands from mineral entry, thereby making the U.S. even more dependent on foreign countries and worsening an already serious vulnerability in America's national security.
Franks stated, "Considering President Obama's call for the construction of additional nuclear power plants, it is astonishing to me that the Administration would nevertheless move to ban uranium mining in the most significant known uranium ore reserves in America. Currently, over 90% of our operating reactors receive their uranium supply from foreign countries, many of whom are unfriendly to America and unsympathetic to American interests.
"By prohibiting exploitation of northern Arizona reserves, the Obama Administration strategically weakens America's long-term national security and our ability to be energy self-sufficient. It also seriously calls into question President Obama's supposed commitment to increase our domestic nuclear energy production in order to protect America's national security."
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, northern Arizona reserves total 326 million pounds or enough uranium to power the entire state of Arizona for 79 years. Arizona deposits range from 0.7 % to 3% grade uranium—by far the best quality reserves anywhere in the continental U.S.
In 1984, Congress passed the Arizona Wilderness Act, which specifically recognized the uranium potential of 490,000 acres of BLM lands and 50,000 acres of Forest Services lands by releasing them from wilderness study classification so they could be mined. The bill was a collaborative effort that included the mining and livestock industries, the National Parks Conservation Association, the Wilderness Society, and the Sierra Club. To this day, uranium mining activities on these lands have a record of productive operation and successful reclamation without impacting the environment or National Parks.

CNN: Obama talks with USDA employee forced out of her job Shirley Sherrod got her wish Thursday: a conversation with President Barack Obama about her forced resignation from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The president and Sherrod spoke by telephone after Obama apparently had some trouble getting through to her. Afterward, Sherrod told CNN that the call was "very, very good." Obama offered his support and said the two had faced similar issues in their pasts, Sherrod said. However, she said they didn't discuss whether the White House had a role in her ouster by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, which came after misleading and incomplete video footage of a speech she gave was posted on the internet and picked up in media reports.

Politico: Norm Coleman eyes challenge to Michael Steele Former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman is considering a run for chairmanship of the RNC, POLITICO has learned, and has begun talking to associates about taking on Michael Steele, should the embattled current chairman seek another term in January. Coleman is planning to attend the RNC’s summer meeting next month in Kansas City, in part to be on hand for a tribute to longtime New Jersey Committeeman David Norcross, who is stepping down from his party post. But senior Republicans say the former senator’s appearance at the committee’s gathering will also allow him to meet the party members who will pick the next chairman and signal to them that he’s interested in the job.

An Open Conspiracy To Slant the News National Review Online The JournoList has started to leak like an over-ripe diaper. Just in case you’ve been living in a cave, or if you only get your news from MSNBC, here’s the story. A young blogger, Ezra Klein, formerly of the avowedly left-wing American Prospect and now with the avowedly mainstream Washington Post, founded the e-mail listserv JournoList for like-minded liberals to hash out and develop ideas. Some 400 people joined the by-invitation-only group. Most, it seems, were in the media, but many hailed from academia, think tanks, and the world of forthright liberal activism generally. They spoke freely about their political and personal biases, including their hatred of Fox News and Rush Limbaugh. That off-the-record intellectual bacchanalia has started to haunt the participants like an inexplicable rash... Read The Full Story:
Sarah Palin calls Journolists ’sick puppies’ Daily Caller From a remote location on an island off Alaska’s coast, former Governor Sarah Palin is blasting what she describes as the “sick puppies” in the media who immediately and ruthlessly attacked her when Sen. John McCain picked her as his running mate during the 2008 presidential campaign. In exclusive remarks to The Daily Caller, Palin described “hordes of Obama’s opposition researchers-slash ‘reporters’” descending upon Alaska in the days after she was picked by McCain. She said the media became a key reason she decided not to finish out her term as governor and faults, in part, the McCain campaign... Read The Full Story:
