The article also raises some serious issues about potential campaign finance law violations… “Visitors to www.RunwaytoWin.com may find themselves asking yet another question: Is the Obama campaign promoting a president or a product? “While the products’ prices are high by conventional standards, it all speaks to a certain cheapening of the commander-in-chief. It underscores yet again the Obama campaign’s desire to run on something—anything!—other than the president’s record. “In 2008, Barack Obama had no record, so he ran on empty slogans. RNC Political Director Rick Wiley: “Today’s caucuses in Colorado give us an opportunity to evaluate the last three years since Obama took office and how broken promises and failed economic policies have caused Coloradans to sour on Obama… “Gallup just released job approval numbers last week and six in ten Coloradans believe that Barack Obama is failing at his job. Those are dangerous numbers when you look at an electorate that is as charged up as it is right now… “I believe if you look at Colorado and the successes we have had picking up two U.S. House seats, picked the State House up, one thing I think is important to realize is we picked up Secretary of State and the Treasurer’s office along with the AG when the top of the ticket failed. So it’s rare in politics when down ballot races succeed when the top of the ticket doesn’t do as well, but it shows that the wave from 2010 certainly reached Colorado, and I believe that it’s right in our sights in 2012 to turn it from blue, back to red… “Sixty-two thousand Coloradans have lost their jobs since Barack Obama took office. If you look at the number of seats where the Broncos host their football games, 215,000 people are out of work in Colorado; you can fill that stadium nearly three times with the folks that are out of work in Colorado. “I think at the end of the day, one thing to keep in mind is that Colorado is still a GOP leaning state. We have nearly a 100,000 person voter registration advantage in the state. The latest campaign-finance flap is about sacks. “At a New York fund-raising event Tuesday called ‘Runway to Win,’ President Barack Obama's re-election campaign plans to begin selling campaign-themed tote bags, T-shirts and accessories designed by more than two dozen famous designers. “Attendees can purchase a tote bag designed by Derek Lam for $75. A collectible makeup bag created by Richard Blanch with nail polish in Red-y To Win Red, Victory White and Bo Blue is going for $40. And a silk scarf featuring Mr. Obama's likeness by Thakoon Panichgul is $95. Profits from the sales will go to Mr. Obama's campaign chest. “Republicans contend the sale might violate campaign-finance rules. The gear will sell for a fraction of the price the designers' merchandise typically fetches at department stores. Republicans say that suggests they relied on corporate resources to keep costs low, which could amount to illegal campaign contributions. On Mr. Lam's website, handbags range in price from $340 to $1,890…three scarves offered on Mr. Thakoon's website go for $325 apiece. "‘This raises serious questions about whether corporate money, property and employees were improperly used in the design and production of these items without reimbursement,’ said Sean Spicer, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee… “Designers can't ask employees to work on political projects unless they willingly volunteered their time…If the designer or staff are paid by anyone other than the campaign, it would be considered a campaign contribution from a company to a candidate… “The fund-raising effort will be launched before the start of Fashion Week in New York. Excerpts from USA Today February 5, 2012   “Few Americans of any political stripe would disagree with the simple proposition that the government should steer away from meddling in church affairs. Certainly, it should never try to force a religiously affiliated institution to violate a central tenet of its faith… “In drawing up the rules that will govern health care reform, the Obama administration didn't just cross that line. It galloped over it, requiring employers affiliated with the Catholic Church to include free birth control in their health insurance plans. That's contrary to both Catholic doctrine and constitutional guarantees of religious freedom… “The administration has mounted three lines of defense for its decision, all of which sidestep the central issue… “The exemption does not cover Catholic organizations that employ or serve large numbers of people of different faiths…Those organizations and the people who lead them would be put in the impossibly awkward position of facilitating contraception even though the church teaches that it is ‘intrinsically wrong to use contraception to prevent new human beings from coming into existence.’ “The administration…argues that nearly all women use contraception at some point in their lives…that it is expensive, and that the prestigious Institute of Medicine says birth control should be part of a comprehensive health care plan. We're sympathetic to the medical reasoning, but good intentions are not sufficient grounds to override religious freedom. The government is free to promote contraception in other ways. We all know that Nevada was crucial to sending Obama to the White House four years ago, but in three years, the landscape has changed dramatically in the Silver State. “You look at Nevada today, we have the highest unemployment rate in the country, nearly 82,000 jobs have been lost in the three years since Obama took office, and unfortunately for Nevadans, 60 straight months of the highest foreclosure rate in the country. “To be fair, the economic problems didn’t start the day Obama took office of the presidency, but it is fair to remind voters that repeatedly Obama has put himself on the clock and promised relief and has gone so far as to say that if you’re not better off today than you were four years ago, then this is one term proposition. I think that Nostradamus-like prediction is going to come true as we get to November of this year. “Nevada was one of the nine battleground states that Obama won in 2008 that President Bush won in 2004, which makes…Nevada very crucial to the president’s reelection campaign…Gallup reported this week that his presidential approval ratings by state are declining sharply, and Nevada is one of the highest in decline… “So those are horrendous numbers for an incumbent trying to run for reelection in this economy…In Nevada specifically, he is trailing by 11 points in the Independent votes, 53% of Independents in Nevada…disapprove of his handling of his job…Almost more troubling for the president is nearly one in five, 17% of Democrats do not approve of his handling of his job. So, you have a problem with Independents and he has a problem with his base… “For months now the Republicans have been gaining on the Democrats there. We’ve had an advantage of about 3,200 in the month of January, and we continue to make gains to catch the Democrats. They had a huge margin after the 2008 Democratic Caucus where they invoked some same day registration and we’ve narrowed that gap down to about 47,000 now…Republicans are getting very enthused about not only about voting against Obama, but voting and supporting our eventual nominee. “If you look at what happened in 2010, we elected who was just a great rising star and a great governor, Brian Sandoval. WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus released the following statement on the January unemployment report: “While today’s jobs report brings welcome news of lower unemployment, far too many Americans are still without work.  Our economy remains unacceptably weak, and families across the country are still struggling to make ends meet,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “Three years ago yesterday, President Obama said that if he didn’t have the economy fixed ‘in three years,’ his presidency would ‘be a one-term proposition.’ Today’s unemployment numbers remind us that our economy is far from fixed. That, by the president’s own standard, should make him a one-term president. “After three years in office, Barack Obama has failed to produce the economic recovery he promised. His endless pursuit of regulations, mandates, taxes and deficits made economic recovery significantly more difficult.   “Our country desperately needs a change in direction. We need a president who will fight for hard-working taxpayers, not just campaign donors and his own job. As the campaigner-in-chief travels around the country, he’s making countless promises for a second term. Excerpts from National Journal By: Ronald Brownstein February 2, 2012   “The Gallup state-by-state average approval numbers for 2011 released this week don't necessarily predict where President Obama will finish on Election Day, but they do measure the hill he must climb to win re-election. “The most important number in presidential elections, of course, is 270 - the number of Electoral College votes it takes to win. The best way to examine the Gallup numbers is to measure them against that yardstick. “In 2010, if you sorted down from Obama's highest approval rating to his lowest, he could reach 270 Electoral College votes by carrying the 22 states plus the District of Columbia where his approval rating stood at 46.9 percent or more… “In the 2011 numbers, the situation looks much more difficult for Obama. From 2010 to 2011, Gallup found, his average approval ratings dropped in every state except Connecticut, Maine and (oddly enough) Wyoming. As a result, to reach 270 Electoral College votes based on the 2011 numbers, he would need to win 20 states plus the District of Columbia where his approval rating stands at 44.5 percent or more…  “Obama in 2010 could reach an Electoral College majority by carrying states where his approval rating stood at least at 46.6 percent, something that would be difficult but hardly impossible. To reach a majority based on the 2011 results, he'd need to carry states where his approval stood at 43.7 percent or above. That's a much more daunting prospect… “In 2011, the states in which Obama's approval rating exceeds 50 percent-enough to make him a clear favorite-have a combined total of 159 Electoral College votes. His rating stands between 47 percent and 49.9 percent in states with another combined 56 Electoral College votes. That means he's favored at least somewhat in states with 215 Electoral College votes. That's a big decline from 2010, when he stood above 50 percent in states with 175 Electoral College votes and from 47 to 49.9 percent in states with another 84, for 259 favored votes… “The implication is that the number of states Obama can plausibly contest to reach 270 Electoral College votes is narrowing…in 2010, Obama's approval rating stood at 47 percent or above in New Mexico, Oregon, Iowa, Ohio and Nevada, all states he carried in 2008. Eager to provide political cover for Obama’s embattled Attorney General, House Democrats…released a report attempting to exonerate Holder and his political appointees for failing to do their jobs. “Of course, their report says Holder’s innocent. The facts say he’s guilty. I say he must resign. “This cynical ploy is just the latest effort by Democrats to cover up the truth. Slowly but surely, their web of misstatements, falsehoods, and shifting blame is coming unraveled, revealing a reckless and incompetent administration… “It’s a disaster and tragedy that could have been prevented, and the Justice Department refuses to take responsibility… “Democrats will do anything to avoid blame. The DOJ withheld information. The White House accused congressmen of ‘playing politics.’…The administration sealed the court documents connected to the murder of the border patrol agent… “Obama still insisted in October that he has 'complete confidence in Attorney General Holder and how he handles his office.' That’s the biggest problem. Obama has 'complete confidence' in a scandal-ridden department… “Americans…have lost their confidence in this administration, and I, along with many other Republicans, have repeatedly called for Holder’s resignation. “Why Obama Should Be Worried”  Excerpts from POLITICO: “To hear Democrats (and much of the media) tell it, President Barack Obama is a man on the rebound… “There is a big problem with this Pollyanna punditry: There are bunch of real-time numbers coming in that tell a much different tale. “In short, there’s a new Congressional Budget Office report that shows unemployment likely to climb to nearly 9 percent by the election, there’s polling data showing Obama tied or trailing…in the most important swing states…and there is mounting evidence that the assumption of a decisive Obama fundraising advantage for the fall might be flat wrong. All of this is happening while Republicans are at their worst…spending millions of dollars and using all of their air time explaining why the other is untrustworthy, deeply flawed and eminently beatable by Obama… “A new CBO report grabbed lots of headlines for projecting the deficit will top $1 trillion this year — making Obama the first president ever to pile up $1 trillion or more every year in office… “The CBO projects unemployment will rise, hitting 8.8 percent in the third quarter of the year, the heart of the campaign. That’s terrible politics. Obama advisers have told us repeatedly on background that if unemployment is above 8.5 percent in the final months of the campaign, it will be extremely hard, if not impossible, to win. The advisers say independents will not return to Obama if it looks like economic growth is anemic and uncertain and it looks like his policies did little, if anything, to create new jobs under his watch. “Economists seem divided on the question of whether robust enough economic and job growth can happen in time for Obama to benefit… “If Obama is on the rebound, someone forgot to tell swing voters in the most important up-for-grabs states in 2012. “Gallup, which both parties praise for its detailed appraisals of voters’ moods, just crunched the numbers in the 12 states that can authentically be called swing states. Excerpts from The Hill By Amie Parnes and Jeremy Herb January 31, 2012   “The White House’s weeks-long effort to counterprogram against the GOP presidential primary fight has veered off course over the past two days… “A day before the Florida primary, the president stumbled twice in an online chat on Google+, first when he got into an awkward discussion with a woman about her unemployed husband and said it was ‘interesting’ that he hadn’t found work in the engineering field. “Almost instantly, Republicans and reporters pounced on Obama’s off-the-cuff remarks. “Kirsten Kukowski, a press secretary at the Republican National Committee (RNC), immediately fired off an email to reporters: ‘Maybe there’s a difference in how the president sees our economy and how Americans see our economy,’ she said. And in a matter of hours, the RNC created a Web ad, hammering Obama as out of touch. “Obama also earned unwanted media attention by for the first time acknowledging the classified drone program and defending the use of drone strikes to kill members of al Qaeda in countries such as Pakistan. “Newspapers overseas said Obama was ‘confirming’ and ‘admitting’ that the United States is flying drones over Pakistan, and a spokesman for Pakistan’s foreign ministry called the drone strikes ‘unlawful, counterproductive and hence unacceptable.’ “White House press secretary Jay Carney was left to field questions about Obama’s comments in Tuesday’s press briefing from reporters who asked if Obama had slipped up, revealing a little more than he might have intended.  “‘He’s the commander in chief of the armed forces of the United States,’ Carney replied. ‘I would point you to his comments.
